The more the book circulated - the longer it is passed between those gathered under the tree - the more the unspoken opposites against which the emblem of the book stood were asserted and made real. Repetition was essential - the colonial official must insist that the book continues to circulate until its authority is accepted- but this very repetition served to undermine the emblematic authority of the artefact: 'the colonial presence is always ambivalent, split between its appearance as original and authoritative and its articulation as repetition and difference' (Bhabha 1985: 93).

The central idea in this chapter has been that of instability. The discourse of colonialism in southern Africa, the Chesapeake and elsewhere was a movement between the public transcript of those in power and the hidden transcript of those resisting authority and domination. Here, as elsewhere in the colonial world, we have seen Foucault's microphysics of power in constant play. In their public transcripts slave owners may have argued that slavery was part of a natural order of the world and that women should know their place.

The obvious, and sometimes the only, solution was the deracination of slave women and colonized subjects to produce a new generation of enculturated indigenes. But this in turn set up further instabilities along the access of gender as women were graded by perceptions of racial purity and married through ambitions of status. We will see in later chapters how these structural instabilities in colonial patriarchy gave women a degree of power that is often not recognized. William Byrd has served us well as an exemplar of the colonial patriarch.
